AUDIT Analysis

In this post I use AUDIT to analyse my blogs so far.

SWOT Analysis

In this blog I am analysing my blog so far using SWAT analysis to identify key areas that can be improved and areas that are also going well.

Strengths:

I include screenshots to show my work from softwares like adobe premiere as well as photos of written work to give a visual detailed representation in my blog posts.

Weaknesses

I don't use enough presentations or content I've made on the computer to show discussions or thinking processes. I also don't always have enough written detail in my blogs to explain any images I have put in.

Threats

Often I do not blog regularly, and I post multiple blogs at once which may affect the quality of them as the ideas or what I'm blogging about might not be fresh in my mind.

Opportunities

I like using screenshots as it can show the person looking at your blog what you are doing and what processes I am using to do it. To improve this though I think I could use multiple screenshots as I go along to show progression and the techniques I am using.

Blogging health check 2

In the future, I need to do more independent posts and add to group posts to make sure I am posting everything that needs to be posted from the checklist. I also need to post on my blog regularly instead of posting different posts at once.

Blogging Health Check 2 Feedback

I am going to improve existing blogs by adding more content/missing content

Details Of Improvements We'll be making

When re-filming, we are going to take a variety of shot types that contrast well with the ones we already have, for example the worms eye view shot of the victims feet will be contrasted with a worms eye view shot of the rushing gang members.

We also need to re-shoot the scenes taken outside during dark hours because the footage is very difficult to see

Editing

On Monday the 12th of December, we started to edit our title sequence and finding out what sound suits best.
We put most of the scenes together as all of them were not filmed, we still have the car scene to do and more shot types of the previous scenes we already did to add more tension and thrill.
We also need to add in the ident (Lionsgate) and we realised the first scene was too dark (we will re-film this scene with stronger lights)but we still added it into the sequence for the rough cut showing.

Editing our rough cut (Owen)

To edit our opening we used adobe Premiere Pro. This software is good because it allows us to view shots and clips and edit them before we put them in our opening. It also allows us to add in our own sound and sound effects. We added certain shots and cut them shorter for continuity.

Overall we were happy with editing and we think it's good for a first take, however we know we need to re-shoot some shots and clips, primarily because of lighting issues.

Feedback on rough cuts

Feedback

The feedback we got was reassuring and was mostly positive, however, there were a few things we need to fix to improve.
  • Make the scenes more visible (more lights)
  • More range of shot types of all the scenes
  • Finish scenes (car scenes)
We will be meeting up after the christmas holidays to film the extra scenes.

This was in the block scene where the victim unexpectedly gets beaten up by a group of boys while leaving his house.

Saturday 10th December :FILMING Behind the scenes

Filming on Saturday was very fun, we managed to get footage for the scenes that took place in the estate. However, due to the footage of the gang running into the block being extremely dark, we have to re film that scene on another day and use the bigger light as well as shooting the car and bike scenes.

How film openings attract an audience

Title sequence

The purpose of a film opening is that the audience gets an idea of the cast and crew that is involved in the film making. The title sequence also promotes the actors and the directors of the film. The sequence can also give the audience an idea of the genre of the film.

Film opening

The purpose of a film opening and title sequence are similar as they both include some titles and film credits. However, the film opening normally sets a scene of the film with an establishing shot, this also helps the audience understand what genre it is. The film opening also gives an insight to what the film is about.

Establishing shots

Establishing shots set the scene (Location) and the time period (Past, Present or Future) the film is set in. The establishing shot also shows the distribution of a film. The opening shot can also establish the main character of a film.

The use of sound

Through the use of sound they can also attract audiences. In my previous blog posts I talked about how important sound is in film. This could mean good soundtracks, or good sound effects.

Branding Our Blog

I decided to make our blog more representative of our genre by creating a collage including images of teen crime drama codes & conventions. Masks, drugs, handcuffs and weapons are all typical links of teen crime drama, although not all of them are focused on in our film, the style of the collage and its content well represents our film.

Pitch evaluation

In my opinion our pitch task was successfully completed and presented. Everyone in the group knew their role and time managed their selves properly to create a professional piece of presentation at the end of our pitch tasks deadline.
There was one person missing from our group which happened last minute but we managed to pull ourselves together and present his ideas for him.
Our pitch did not have waffling within and was clear and straight forward because we came up with a very fair plan.
Some regular positive ideas presented by our peers are as it follows:
- good detail
- clearly explained
-visually interesting

I agree with these comments as we have put in a lot of detailed work which was actually summarised in our pitch presentation however individually it could be identified within our individual pitch posts.

Targets
From the feedback we received, we will be adding more visual representations, updating our shot list and creating a more detailed storyboard which will make our idea more informative and up to date.
Some slides were not added into the presentation which will be added to improve the presentation.
We will also be giving more sound examples that we will be including in our film as we are still in the process of deciding which one will suit the best.

Problems we've had with filming footage

Problems we've had with filming footage

One the 6th of December, we went to Brixton Hill to film some car scenes, we brang a camera and lights as it was quite dark outside therefore it would help the footage visually.
We had filmed two car scenes which were please with and distributed the equipment evenly on our journey homes.
On the day we decided to do the review, edit and put the first scenes together, we had problems finding the footage we had recorded previously.
Therefore our footage had gotten corrupted and we had lost the previous recordings.
Our plan is to reshoot the car scene on Saturday 10th of December in addition with all of the other shots we planned to do on that day, i don't think it would be a problem as we will have a lot of time to film due to the schedule of our gatherings.
It may leave us recording for a bit longer than we intended to but our group our fine with this.

Reviewing footage problems

Reviewing footage

When I went to review and edit the footage, it was not coming up on the memory cards. This was concerning but we have another day of filming which I'm going to on Saturday and we can re shoot the footage then. When we re-film we're going to make sure the footage saves when we are recording and ensure we have all the space we need on the memory cards.

Issues With Footage

On Tuesday 6th December, me(Dorrina) and Raqeeba had met in Brixton Hill and filmed the first scene of our title sequence which was the car scene. In the following Media lesson (Thursday 8th December), our group had came to view our footage but the footage could not be found. This has caused a minor set back but since the scene shot was only a small segment of our opening there will be no problem re-filming it along with the rest of our storyboard on Saturday 10th December.

Pitch evaluation

3 Targets:

- Share work in the group equally
- Become more familiar with the uses and benefits of sound
- Make a shot by shot remake and story board

Analysisng sound

Zodiac

In this blogpost I am analysing sound from the opening scene in a film called Zodiac.

The opening scene has music, dialogue and foleys. The music is upbeat to show how the characters are in a rush. The characters also have dialogue to show the viewers what is going on. The scene also has foleys which make the scene more real to the viewers.

I thought the sound was good in this scene because it brought the visuals to life and the music also made it more interesting. This gave me some ideas for our opening scene:

  • Music- We can use music to make our scene interesting and set set tone
  • Sound mix- Mixing the sound from the scene and any other sound we want to put over it is important.
  • Foleys- Its important to make sure these sounds are at the right level as it adds t the realism of the scene

Branding my blog

On our blog we decided to change the background template to this as our film is a teen crime drama, so with this image it shows a gun, handcuffs and masks. although a gun will not be used in our film violence is still influences our film.

Importance of sound

Importance of sound

What is sound: Sound is produced by vibrations that are continuous / regular.

In film sound is used to establish a clear tone or atmosphere. It can also be used to help give the audience a better idea about the plot, characters or to identify the genre of the film. World famous director George Lukas, director of Star Wars argues that sound is 50%, meaning that sound is just as important as the actual filming.

When watching a title sequence without sound it was very boring, I was not very interested in watching the movie and i had a bad understanding of the plot of the film. However, when watching the same title sequence again but this time with sound I felt more alert and was not as easily distracted because I was interested and had a good understanding of the plot of the movie.

Analysing sound in a chosen film

Panic Room

In this sequence, the sound is one musical piece of intense music. This creates a tense atmosphere and the audience has a feeling of not knowing what is coming next. However there are also sounds from the cars and general noises of the busy city. I thought this was effective as it means that the viewer is gripped and compelled as they want to know what happens next. This gave me an idea for my groups title sequence that we could use a similar sort of sound to create the same effect.

My findings

From the analysis I did of the two film openings I found many helpful features I could use in my own film opening. One of them was the range of shots to portray character. This was something they did well in Shaft as they had many shots to show his outfit, and closer shots to show his facial expression.
Another good thing I found in the sequences was the sound. The music fitted well with the scenes in both movies and made them more interesting. This is again something I could use in my film opening as it can create atmosphere and mood effectively through good sound.

Analysing two title sequences

The two film openings I looked at were Shaft and Dragnet, which are both American crime movies.

My feedback Evaluation

From analysing the feedback I decided to come up with a list of what I will do to improve my blogs:

  • Improvement of visual representation. In our pitch we didn't have enough visual representations for people to look at. Because of this, I'm going to include more images of work we have done in class or as a group.
  • Use of sound. As a group we have blog posts about sound but in my posts I don't talk about it enough. Therefor, i will talk about it more when we are blogging about filming and reviewing it.

Creating our Twitter

Creating Twitter

We created a twitter page to blog about our filming while we are on the go. We personalised it to our group by putting on our branding and logos.
We will be posting backstage pictures and videos of the production whilst we are out filming.
