"Sound is 50% of the entertainment in a movie." - George Lucas
Sound is what we hear. It helps us to determine the genre, plot, and tone of a film even without us looking at the visuals.
In class we watched the opening title sequence of The Taking of Pelham 123 first without sound and then with.
Watching the opening without sound was very boring we couldn't watch the rest of it in silence! I found myself very distracted by other things in the room or my own thoughts because usually sound is the first thing that grabs your attention and also maintains your attention.
Watching the opening with sound was much more attention grabbing and the uses of foley such as the phone ringing or the cars going past, really puts you into the scene of whats going on as it is triggers prominent sensory aspects that make the audience more involved.
